Who we are

Justice Access Foundation is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation and prospective 501(c)(3) public charity. We work to expand access to the civil legal system, protect due process rights, and help prevent housing instability, wage theft, and exploitation affecting individuals and families who lack adequate legal resources.

What we do

Our Programs & Services

In the United States, roughly 80% of people involved in civil cases navigate the courts without a lawyer. For most, the reason is simple: traditional legal representation is simply too expensive, especially for small claims and everyday disputes.

Housing & Tenancy Disputes

  • Security Deposit Disputes: Drafting demand letters and filing claims to recover wrongfully withheld deposits.
  • Eviction Defense (Unlawful Detainer): Understanding court notices, summons, and exactly how and when to file your response.
  • Rent and Lease Disputes: Clarifying your rights regarding illegal rent increases, lease violations, and hidden fees.
  • Habitability Issues: Forcing landlords to address unsafe living conditions, lack of heat, or severe maintenance failures.

Wage Protection & Workplace Rights

  • Wage Theft & Unpaid Overtime: Calculating what you are owed and filing formal claims with the California Labor Commissioner.
  • Unlawful Deductions: Challenging illegal payroll deductions and withheld tips.
  • Worker Misclassification: Understanding your rights if you have been wrongly classified as an independent contractor instead of an employee.

Consumer Protection

  • Unfair Business Practices: Fighting back against scams, hidden subscription fees, and predatory lending.
  • Contractor & Service Disputes: Seeking refunds or damages from home repair contractors or mechanics who failed to deliver on their promises.
  • Defective Products: Drafting effective demand letters to manufacturers and retailers to secure replacements or refunds.

Small Claims & Debt Collection Defense

  • Debt Collection Defense: Forcing creditors to prove you actually owe a debt and protecting yourself from unlawful harassment.
  • Small Claims Court Navigation: From filling out the right forms to serving the other party, we guide you through the entire lifecycle of a small claims lawsuit.
  • Hearing Preparation: Helping you organize your evidence (receipts, contracts, photos) and anticipate the questions the judge—and the opposing party—will ask you.
