Support Charitable Access to Justice

Justice Access Foundation is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation and prospective 501(c)(3) public charity. Contributions to JAF support charitable programs that expand access to the civil legal system for individuals and families in California who lack adequate legal resources.

JAF’s programs address:

  • Prevention of housing instability through legal education and procedural guidance
  • Protection of workers against wage theft and labor violations
  • Assistance to self-represented individuals navigating civil court proceedings
  • Public legal education in multiple languages

Use of Funds

All charitable contributions to JAF are used to support direct charitable programming, administrative functions necessary to maintain organizational compliance and governance, and public outreach to extend the reach of JAF’s educational programs.

JAF’s expenditure categories are disclosed annually in its IRS Form 990 filing, organized as follows:

Program Services Direct costs of delivering educational, referral, and procedural navigation programs to beneficiaries.

Management and General Costs of organizational compliance, governance, record-keeping, and legal filing requirements.

Fundraising Costs of donor communication, grant applications, and public support development activities.

Transparency Commitment

JAF is committed to financial transparency:

  • Annual Form 990 filings are publicly available and posted on JAF’s website
  • All charitable funds are held in a dedicated, segregated nonprofit bank account
  • No charitable funds are commingled with any commercial or personal accounts
  • The Board of Directors reviews all financial activity at each quarterly meeting
  • Donor names and contribution amounts are not publicly disclosed beyond IRS requirements

Tax Receipt Compliance

All donations of $250 or more will receive a written acknowledgment from JAF in compliance with IRS requirements under IRC Section 170(f)(8). The acknowledgment will state:

  • The date and amount of the contribution
  • A description of any goods or services provided in exchange (for quid pro quo contributions above $75, a good faith fair market value estimate will be provided)
  • Confirmation that no goods or services were provided in exchange, where applicable

JAF’s federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) is [TBD]. Donors should retain their acknowledgment for tax purposes. JAF does not provide tax advice. Donors are encouraged to consult their own tax advisors regarding the deductibility of their contributions.

Governance Independence

The receipt of any donation — regardless of amount — does not confer any right to influence JAF’s governance, program decisions, or operational activities. The Board of Directors retains sole and exclusive authority over all organizational decisions. This principle is documented in JAF’s Bylaws and confirmed in all donor acknowledgment communications.

JAF is an independent public charity. No donor, funder, or commercial entity controls or influences organizational governance.
